HIDA Leather® begins not in a factory, but in the mountain villages of Gifu, where Hida cattle are raised for food. Their hides are not mass-collected or stockpiled. Instead, we secure each one individually—fresh, local, and with purpose.

Because we work directly with the point of processing, we can tan the hides quickly, preserving strength and preventing decay. This freshness is invisible to the eye, but felt in the durability and honesty of the leather.

We don’t see these hides as waste. We see them as a continuation of life — transformed, not discarded.

HIDA Leather® のはじまりは、工場ではなく、岐阜の山里で育てられた飛騨牛の命から生まれます。その皮は大量に集められることなく、ひとつひとつ丁寧に確保され、新鮮なまま、無駄なく活かされていきます。

私たちは、食肉処理の現場と直接連携することで、革としての加工までの時間を極力短く保っています。見た目ではわからなくとも、この鮮度が革の強さと誠実さにつながっているのです。

この皮を「廃棄物」とは見ていません。命のつづきとして、形を変えて生きていく――それが、HIDA Leather® の出発点です。

🌱 Tannin and Time

What gives leather its strength is not speed, but patience.

We use vegetable tannins— natural extracts from tree bark and plants — to tan each hide slowly and thoroughly.

Most modern leather is chrome-tanned: fast, cheap, and uniform. But that speed often sacrifices character and long-term durability.

Our process takes time. Days, not hours. It allows the leather to absorb strength gently, without forcing it into artificial uniformity.

This is not just about tradition. It’s about honoring the pace at which materials want to change.

革に強さを与えるのは、スピードではなく、時間です。私たちは、木の樹皮や植物から抽出された植物タンニンを使い、時間をかけて一枚ずつ丁寧に鞣しています。

現在の革の多くは、短時間で大量に仕上げるため、クロム鞣しと呼ばれる化学的な方法が使われています。それは均一で速い一方、革本来の表情や耐久性を失わせてしまいます。

私たちの鞣しは、時間を味方にする方法です。数時間ではなく、数日かけて、素材がゆっくりと変化するのを、無理なく受け入れていく。それは伝統のためではなく、素材が変化したい速度を尊重するための選択です。

Color that breathes and changes.

We do not paint our leather. We dye it—slowly and deeply.

Paint sits on the surface. It seals, covers, and hides. It creates a smooth finish, but prevents aging. Over time, paint cracks, peels, and separates.

Dye, on the other hand, becomes part of the leather. It sinks into the fibers, allowing light and time to shape the surface naturally.

When leather is dyed—not painted—it can breathe. It can darken where touched, fade where exposed, and grow more beautiful with each day of use.

That’s why we dye. To let the material speak, not mask it.

私たちは、革を「塗装」しません。時間をかけて「染める」ことを選びます。塗料は表面を覆い、封じ込め、隠してしまいます。均一で綺麗に見えますが、やがてヒビが入り、剥がれ、劣化します。

一方で染色は、革そのものに染み込み、繊維の中に色が根づいていきます。時間と光に応じて、自然に表情を変えていきます。

染めた革は呼吸できます。触れたところは濃くなり、日差しにさらされたところは淡くなる。そうやって毎日の暮らしと共に、美しさが育っていきます。私たちが染めるのは、素材に語らせたいから。隠すのではなく、引き出すために。

We don’t remove these marks. We don’t paint over them. We keep them, because they are honest. They remind us that this leather once lived,and that it continues to live in a new form.

Over time, your own touch will leave subtle changes. The leather will darken where you hold it, soften where it’s used. It becomes familiar—like a well-worn path.

同じ革は、二つとありません。それぞれに異なるシワやキズ、繊維のムラがあり、それは欠点ではなく、命の記憶です。

私たちは、それらを削り取ったり、塗り隠したりしません。むしろ、そのまま残すことで、素材の正直さを伝えたいと考えています。この革はかつて生きていたものであり、今は別のかたちで、再び暮らしとともに生きています。そして使う人の手が触れることで、革は少しずつ変化していきます。
