Built to Be Taken Apart
Power Tools Between Everyday Work and Emergency
At FUSHI HOUSE, we built a shelf for the power tools we use in our everyday work.
These tools are used to make things, but they may also help us cut, remove, drill, or make temporary repairs after a disaster. Equipment stored only for emergencies can remain untouched for years. Tools that are used regularly, maintained, and familiar to us are more likely to be useful when they are needed. Here, everyday use is also a form of preparedness.
At the centre of this system are the batteries. Even when mains power is unavailable, charged batteries can keep cordless tools available for cutting, drilling, and temporary repairs. Combined with compatible lights or USB adapters, they can also provide lighting and power for mobile phones and other small devices. Keeping them in everyday use and regularly charged means keeping a modest reserve of power within daily life.
The shelf itself follows the same idea. It was built without adhesive so that it can be taken apart and reconfigured as the tools, the people, and the space change. This is not a rejection of adhesive, but a choice to leave the structure open to another use.
Making something last does not always mean fixing it permanently. The ability to dismantle, return it to material, and build again may also be a way of keeping it alive.
Preparedness should not be stored away.
Completion need not be fixed.
This shelf is a small practice that connects the two.
解体することを前提につくる
災害時のパワーツールと、接着しない棚
FUSHI HOUSEに、日々使う電動工具を収める棚をつくった。
電動工具は、ものをつくるためだけでなく、災害時には、壊れたものを外す、切る、穴をあける、仮に直すといった作業にも役立つ可能性がある。非常時のためだけにしまわれた道具よりも、普段から使い、手入れし、状態を把握している道具の方が、必要なときに扱いやすい。日常的に使うこと自体が、備えにもなる。
その中心にあるのが、バッテリーである。停電によって電源が失われても、充電されたバッテリーがあれば、切断や穴あけ、仮の修復といった作業を続けられる。対応する照明やUSBアダプターと組み合わせれば、明かりや携帯電話などの電源にもなる。普段から使いながら充電状態を保つことは、日常の中に小さな電力の蓄えを持つことでもある。棚もまた、同じ考えでつくられている。接着剤を使わず、工具や使う人、空間の変化に応じて、解体し、組み替えられるようにした。接着を否定するのではなく、別の使い方へ開いておくための選択である。
長く使うことは、動かないように固めることだけではない。解体し、材料へ戻し、もう一度つくれることも、ものを生かし続ける方法になる。
備えを、しまい込まない。
完成を、固定しすぎない。
この棚は、その二つをつなぐ小さな実践である。
