KURE EAVES
An ongoing architectural experiment exploring how traditional KURE roofing can continue within contemporary architecture.
At FUSHI HOUSE, a small eave is being built using hand-split KURE boards. Rather than reproducing a historical roof as it was, the project explores how inherited materials, techniques, and knowledge can be understood and applied within a contemporary building.
Why KURE EAVES?
KURE roofs were once part of everyday life in Hida. Today, however, opportunities to build and use traditional KURE roofs have become extremely limited.
KURE EAVES is not intended simply to reproduce a historical roof. It is an experiment in bringing KURE back into actual use.
KURE EAVES
The Experiment
KURE EAVES will continue to change after construction is complete.
The hand-split boards will be exposed to rain, snow, sunlight, and time. The space beneath the eave will also be used for KURE-hegi, where fire is used to warm the wood before splitting. Smoke and heat from this work will therefore become part of the conditions affecting the roof.
FUSHI will continue to observe and document these changes over time, using the eave as an ongoing study of how KURE behaves through actual use.
KURE EAVES
