How Do We Guide the Split?

割れを、どう導くのか

Introduction

When making a KURE board, the split does not naturally stay in the center.

Craftspeople guide the split by repeatedly bending the board and turning it over.

The following diagram illustrates the basic principle behind this traditional technique.

榑板をへぐ際、割れは自然には中央を進みません。職人は板を曲げ、裏返すことを繰り返しながら、割れを少しずつ中央付近へ導いています。以下の図は、その基本原理を示したものです。

Key Principle

The split tip always moves slightly toward the side that is bent. By turning the board over and repeating the process, the split is guided back toward the center, allowing an even KURE board to be produced.

Summary

  • The split does not naturally stay in the center.
  • Bending guides the split tip.
  • Turning the board over reverses the relationship.
  • Repeating this process produces an even KURE board.
