Trees Breath

WORKSIGHT 17 — Plants/Ethics, 2022

In 2022, Kei Wakabayashi visited Hida to explore Yoshiyuki Makino’s inquiry into wood.
The article begins by asking whether wood, once felled and made into material, can be considered alive or dead. From there, it moves through compounds released from wood, what people perceive in the forest, and the intuitive senses developed through working with wood.
A Perspective on Skill and Nature
Wakabayashi focuses on the intuitive senses developed through the repeated practice of working with wood. Rather than seeing such intuition simply as accumulated experience, he considers it as a kind of sensor — a way of perceiving information in nature that is not immediately visible.
From this perspective, skill is not only a means of shaping natural materials according to human intention. It may also become a way for people to enter into a deeper relationship with nature and respond to what is already there.
Looking Back from FUSHI
This article was published in 2022, before FUSHI had taken its present form. Looking back from today, many of the questions explored in the article — how people perceive wood, how knowledge emerges through practice, and how we position ourselves in relation to nature — can be seen as part of the foundation from which FUSHI later developed.
