Making Use of Wood, Living with Wood

KIDZUKI

2024

In 2024, KIDZUKI visited FUSHI HOUSE to explore Yoshiyuki Makino’s relationship with wood.

Beginning with the house as a place for living and experimentation, the article moves through research into wood, local materials, inherited practices such as Utou Shakushi, and the continuation of local knowledge.

A Perspective on Living with Wood

KIDZUKI looks across activities that might otherwise appear separate — living in FUSHI HOUSE, researching wood, working with local materials, and continuing inherited practices.

Rather than treating them as independent projects, the article presents them as interconnected ways of exploring how wood can remain part of contemporary life.

Looking Back from FUSHI

Published in 2024, this article captures a period when many of the activities that now form FUSHI were already developing, but had not yet taken the form they have today.

The article also documents an attempt to take over a local sawmill, which ultimately could not be continued. Yet the underlying question remained: how can locally available wood be used, and how can the knowledge and skills surrounding it be carried forward? FUSHI’s current work with KURE is one of the practices that has emerged from continuing to pursue that question.
