THE TREE
A large cherry tree had to be felled to make way for a new home.
FUSHI was asked by landscape designer Hirofumi Suga to find a way to give the tree a new life.
新しい家を建てるため、やむを得ず伐採された大きな桜。その木を活かせないかと、庭師・ランドスケープデザイナーのスガさんからFUSHIに相談があった。
19 June 2024 - The cherry tree arrives in HIDA.
SAWING
The tree appeared to have grown from three trunks fused together.
Before sawing, there was concern that the log might separate along those boundaries. As the interior was revealed, some sections remained sound enough to use.
この桜は、もともと三本の幹が癒着しながら成長したように見えた。製材前には、その境界からばらばらになるのではないかという懸念があった。内部が現れ、使えそうな部分が残っていることが分かったとき、安堵したことを覚えている。
TIME
After sawing, the boards were stacked with spacers and left to dry naturally in Hida.
Rather than deciding their final form immediately, the material was given time to move, dry, and reveal its condition.
製材後、板は桟積みにして、飛騨で天然乾燥を続けている。すぐに最終的な形を決めるのではなく、木が動き、乾き、その状態が見えてくるまで時間を置く。
ONE TREE, TWO DIRECTIONS
From the same tree, two different uses are beginning to take shape.
One will become a dining table for the house. The other will return to the garden as outdoor benches.
一本の桜から、二つの異なる使い方が形になり始めている。一つは家のダイニングテーブルへ。もう一つは、屋外のベンチとして庭へ戻っていく。
INSIDE / DINING TABLE
One of the slabs is being developed into a dining table for the house.
Its irregular edges, cavities, and traces of growth are being treated as conditions for the design rather than defects to be removed.
一枚の板は、家のダイニングテーブルとして計画が進んでいる。不規則な輪郭や空洞、成長の痕跡を取り除くべき欠点ではなく、設計の条件として捉えている。
OUTSIDE / GARDEN BENCHES
Other boards are being considered for outdoor benches in the garden.
Their dimensions, drying requirements, and use will be determined together with the landscape design.
ほかの板は、庭で使う屋外ベンチとして検討している。材の寸法や乾燥の程度、使い方は、ランドスケープの設計とあわせて決めていく。
CURRENT STATUS
The Sakurajosui project is still in progress.
The dining table is moving into design and production planning, while the outdoor benches are being considered in relation to the garden, their intended use, and the dimensions and drying requirements of the wood.
桜上水のプロジェクトは、現在も進行中である。ダイニングテーブルは設計・製作に向けた検討が進み、屋外ベンチは庭との関係や使い方を踏まえながら、材の寸法や乾燥方法を検討している。
