Located in Hida Folk Village, Yamaka Chaya is a small takeaway stand serving matcha-besed drinks and Japanese refreshaments to visitors from Japan and around the world. Through drinks, conversation, and the benches in front of the chaya, small encounters arise between people who might otherwise simply pass one another by.

For FUSHI, a Hida Takayama–based company exploring Japanese wood culture through practice and research, operating the chaya is an everyday practice of keeping the culture of hospitality and exchange alive.

飛騨の里にある「やまか茶屋」は、抹茶を中心とした和の飲み物を提供しながら、国内外から訪れる人々を迎える、テイクアウト専門の小さな茶屋です。飲み物と会話、そして店先の腰掛けを通して、本来ならすれ違うだけだった人々の間に、小さな出会いが生まれます。

飛騨高山を拠点に、木文化の実践と研究に取り組む株式会社FUSHIにとって、茶屋を営むことは、人を迎え、交流する文化を日々の営みとして現在に生かす実践です。

The Role of the Chaya

茶屋という場所

Before modern forms of travel and accommodation became common, chaya offered travelers a place to rest, drink, and gather information about the road ahead.

They were also places of encounter. People arriving from different directions could exchange news, learn about nearby places, and share a brief conversation before continuing their journeys.

Yamaka Chaya carries this role into the present—not by recreating the past, but by offering a place where visitors can pause and connect through a drink.

近代的な交通や宿泊施設が普及する以前、茶屋は旅人が足を休め、喉を潤し、この先の道について情報を得る場所でもありました。

異なる方向から来た人々が出会い、土地の様子や道中の情報を交わし、再び旅へ戻っていく。茶屋には、そのような人と情報が行き交う役割がありました。

やまか茶屋は、過去の茶屋をそのまま再現するのではなく、飲み物を介して人々が立ち止まり、言葉を交わせる場所として、その役割を現在へつないでいます。
