NAKED WOOD - SHIRAKI
Naked Wood explores the possibility that the Japanese concept of shiraki (untreated wood) reflects more than cultural belief or aesthetics. It asks whether this tradition may also be rooted in subtle bodily responses to wood.
Wood is not merely a material. It is something the body responds to. This inquiry begins from that premise.
Naked Wood は、日本の「白木」という概念が、信仰や美意識だけでは説明できないのではないか、という問いから始まりました。その背景には、木に対する微細な身体の応答があるのではないかと考えています。木は単なる素材ではない。身体が応答する存在である。この探究は、そこから始まります。
The Sensibility of Untreated Wood
In Japan, the concept of shiraki has long been valued. It extended beyond untreated wood itself, encompassing ways of sensing, working with, and relating to wood. The faint scent. The way it reflects light. The quiet texture under the hand. These responses were bodily before they were conceptual.
日本では、「白木」という概念が古くから尊ばれてきた。それは単に塗装していない木を意味するのではなく、木を感じ、向き合い、扱うあり方を含んでいた。ほとんど意識されない匂い。やわらかく光を返す木肌。触れたときの静かな質感。それらは思想になる前に、身体の反応として存在していた。
Presence
Trees were sometimes regarded as dwellings of the sacred. Even after being shaped into timber, that presence was not thought to disappear entirely. Material was not considered entirely separate from its origin.
木は神の依代と考えられることもあった。木材となった後も、その気配が完全に失われるとは考えられていなかった。素材は、その起源から完全に切り離されたものではないと捉えられていた。
A Working Hypothesis
It is possible that traditional sensibilities toward wood were grounded in subtle bodily perception. Not everything felt has been fully explained. Not everything sensed has been fully measured.
白木に対する伝統的な感覚は、微細な身体的知覚に根ざしていた可能性がある。感じられていたすべてが、説明され尽くしているわけではない。測定され尽くしているわけでもない。
