なぜ塗装するのか

多くの木材は塗装して使われる。それはなぜか。木材は水分を吸い込む特性があり、水分がとどまり続ければカビが発生したり、菌が繁殖しいずれ朽ちる。だから乾いた状態を保持する目的で塗装されたり、汚れを除去しやすいようにしたり、見た目の美しさのために塗装される。逆をいえば、濡れにくく汚れがつきにくい場所や自然の木の色で良ければ、塗装をする必要がないことになる。

塗装のデメリット

木材が捉えた水分は、周囲が乾燥していれば逆に放出される。そのため室内に使われた木材は、室内の湿度を調整してくれる。しかも、木材が持つ成分も放出してくれている。私たちが香りと認識できるものはわずかで、多くは気づくこともない。実は近年、この成分に人が癒されていることが分かりはじめている。私たちはそのありがたい恩恵を塗装で台無しにしている。

塗装しないなら研磨しない

木材の仕上げで行われる紙やすりなどによる研磨作業（サンディング）は、木材表面を滑らかにしているようで、実は細かな繊維を起毛させている。そこに水分が留まり菌の繁殖をもたらすので避けたい。

鋭利な刃物で仕上げられた木材を無塗装で使う

塗装しないのなら、カンナなどの鋭利な刃物で仕上げられた木材がおすすめ。繊維が潰れていないため、水分も留まりにくく成分も揮発しやすいからだ。

Why paint?

Many woods are painted and used. Why is this? Wood absorbs moisture, and if the moisture continues to stay in the wood, mold and fungus will grow and eventually decay. Therefore, wood is painted to keep it dry, to make it easy to remove stains, and to improve its appearance. Conversely, if the wood is not easily wetted or stained, or if the natural color of the wood is sufficient, painting is not necessary.

Disadvantages of Painting

Moisture captured by wood is released in the opposite direction if the surrounding area is dry. Therefore, wood used indoors will regulate the humidity in the room. Moreover, the wood also releases its own ingredients. Only a few of them we can recognize as fragrance, and many of them we do not even notice. In fact, in recent years, we have begun to realize that people are healed by this component. We are ruining that gratifying benefit by painting.

If we don't paint, we don't polish.

Sanding, or the sanding process used to finish wood, seems to smooth the surface of the wood, but in fact it raises the fine fibers. This should be avoided because moisture can stay there and cause the growth of fungi.

Use wood that has been finished with a sharp blade and is not painted.

If you are not going to paint, wood finished with a sharp blade such as a planer is recommended. Since the fibers are not crushed, it is difficult for moisture to stay in the wood and the ingredients are easily volatilized.
