Trees fascinate us in various ways 魅了する樹木たち
私たちが植物に管理されていると言ったら、多くの人が違和感を覚えるかもしれない。しかし、植物が私たちにもたらすものはとても多い。光合成による酸素の生成はもとより、動物が住みやすいように環境を穏やかに管理してくれたり、その実を食糧に提供してくれたり、美しい花を見せてくれたり、とても多くの恵みをもたらしてくれている。なぜこれほどまでに利他的なのか。考えてみれば、私たちの生きるこの環境は、植物が作り出したものだ。地球全体のバイオマスのおよそ80~90%が植物であり、我々を含むその他動物は0.3%にしかすぎない。植物が作り出した環境に我々は住まわせてもらっているのであり、私たちは植物の管理下にあると考えられなくもない。
Many people may feel uncomfortable when I say that we are managed by plants. However, plants provide us with so much. Not only do they produce oxygen through photosynthesis, but they also provide us with many other blessings, such as a gentle environment for animals to live in, their fruits for food, and their beautiful flowers. Why are we so altruistic? If you think about it, this environment in which we live was created by plants. Plants account for 80~90% of the earth's biomass, while other animals, including us, account for only 0.3%. We are allowed to live in the environment created by plants, and we can be considered to be under the control of plants.
