Practice
Makino began working with wood at 28. After years of furniture making in Hida, he came to feel the limits of designing objects.
A meeting with Utou Shakushi — a traditional wooden ladle from the region — shifted his direction toward understanding how wood itself has been known and used. When local sawmills began disappearing, he attempted to take one over — the effort did not succeed, but it clarified what was at stake. The encounter with Kure-hegi, the practice of splitting wood along its grain rather than sawing it, brought him to where he works now.
Splitting, carving, drying, shaping — he engages wood as a material that carries both technique and place. This is not driven by nostalgia.
28歳から木工の世界に入り、修行ののち飛騨で独立。長年、家具制作に携わるなかで、自らデザインすることへの限界を感じるようになりました。
有道しゃくしとの出会いをきっかけに、木そのものが持っている構造や記憶を辿ることへ関心が移りました。地域の製材所が次々と姿を消していくことへの危機感から、その引き継ぎに動いたこともありましたが、実現には至りませんでした。その後、榑へぎと出会い、現在に至ります。
割る、削る、乾かす、形づくる。技術と土地の記憶を宿す素材として、木と向き合っています。この実践は、懐古によるものではありません。
Research & Dialogue
From field practice, inquiry expands into research and dialogue.
In collaboration with Kyushu University, Makino has been involved in research on how volatile compounds released by wood interact with human perception — exploring what traditional wood culture understood intuitively, now through scientific observation.
Lectures, public programs, and FUSHI TOUR extend this work beyond the workshop — creating spaces for shared reflection on wood culture.

Through FUSHI, two material projects have grown directly from the work.
HIDA LEATHER is developed specifically to work alongside wood — local Hida beef hides treated and refined as a material that complements wood in both craft and furniture.
Himekomatsu emerged from the research into volatile compounds released by wood. Both are grounded in wood culture, not developed as product lines.
FUSHIを通じて、二つの素材プロジェクトを展開しています。
ヒダレザーは、飛騨牛の皮を、木と合わせることを前提に開発した革です。これまで個人では扱うことが難しかった素材を、木文化の文脈で使えるようにしました。
ヒメコマツは、木材の揮発成分に関する研究が行き着いた形です。
どちらも木文化の探究から生まれた素材であり、単なる商品ではありません。
International Work
In 2022, Makino presented at Japan House London — an evening spanning his furniture practice, the Utou Shakushi tradition, and collaborative research with Kyushu University on how wood’s volatile compounds affect human perception.
2022年、ジャパンハウスロンドンにて研究発表を行いました。地域材を使った家具制作の実践から、木材の揮発成分が人の知覚に与える影響についての九州大学との共同研究まで、木文化の現在を多角的に紹介しました。

1969年、愛知県豊橋市生まれ。
名古屋大学工学部を卒業後、株式会社INAXに入社。6年間の企業勤務を経て、1996年に木工の道へ転身。岐阜・高山の木工訓練校で学んだ後、木工家・川上博一氏に師事し、1999年に独立。
2001年、「マキノ ウッド ワークス（MWW）」を設立。飛騨の家具メーカーのOEM製造に携わりながら、2005年には英建築家ジョン・ポーソン設計、デザイナー・カルバン・クライン邸の家具を製作し、納品のため渡米。
2011年からは、地元・飛騨高山産のナラ材を活用した家具づくりに注力。
2017年には飛騨牛の皮を使った高級家具用革「HIDA Leather®」を開発（商標登録 第6001390号）、2018年には駆除・廃棄されるジビエ皮の再活用にも着手。
2019年、木の内側にある成分の力に着目し、阿部藏之氏のもとで「木の内科的アプローチ」を学ぶ。同年から、木材が自然に放散する微量成分の研究を本格的に開始。2020年には、それらの成分を日常空間に活かす「Cure Furnishing™」という新しいコンセプトを提唱し、高山環境アレルギー対策センターを設立。
2021年には九州大学との共同研究により、香りを感じないほどの低濃度の木材成分にこそ、香りを感じる高濃度成分以上の「脳の鎮静効果」があることを科学的に証明。
2022年、株式会社FUSHIを設立。
同年11月、ジャパンハウス ロンドンで行われたトークイベントにて、日本の木材活用の専門家として登壇し、英国の専門家とともに講演を行った。
また、2019年より有道しゃくし保存会に参加し、現在は副会長を務めている。江戸時代から受け継がれてきた木製杓子の技術と精神を伝えるこの活動を通して、木の文化の保存と次世代への継承に力を注いでいる。
現在は岐阜県高山市に拠点を置き、木工、革、そして木材の成分という三つの軸から、木の力と文化の可能性を探究している。
Yoshiyuki Makino was born in 1969 in Toyohashi, Aichi Prefecture.
After graduating from the School of Engineering at Nagoya University, he joined INAX Corporation. Following six years in the corporate world, he shifted paths in 1996 to pursue woodworking, studying at a training school in Takayama, Gifu. He later apprenticed under master craftsman Hiroichi Kawakami, and became independent in 1999.
In 2001, he established Makino Wood Works (MWW), producing OEM furniture for Hida-based manufacturers. In 2005, he crafted furniture for designer Calvin Klein’s residence—designed by British architect John Pawson—and traveled to the U.S. to personally deliver the pieces.
Since 2011, he has focused on creating furniture using locally sourced oak from the Hida-Takayama region.
In 2017, he developed HIDA Leather®, a premium upholstery leather made from Hida beef hides (Trademark No. 6001390). In 2018, he began repurposing discarded wild game hides for furniture applications.
In 2019, intrigued by the hidden power of wood, he studied the “internal medicine of wood” approach under Kurayuki Abe and began dedicated research into the natural volatile compounds released from wood. In 2020, he proposed the concept of Cure Furnishing™, which integrates these compounds into everyday living environments, and founded the Takayama Environmental Allergy Care Center.
In 2021, a joint study with Kyushu University scientifically demonstrated that ultra-low concentrations of wood-derived compounds—those below the threshold of conscious smell—have a greater calming effect on the brain than higher, detectable concentrations.
In 2022, he founded FUSHI Co., Ltd.
That November, he was invited to speak at a public talk held at Japan House London, where he discussed traditional and modern uses of wood in Japan alongside British experts.
Since 2019, Makino has also been a member of the Utou Shakushi Preservation Society, and currently serves as its Vice President. Through this work, he helps preserve and pass down the techniques and spirit of Edo-period wooden ladles, contributing to the broader cultural heritage of wood in Japan.
He is currently based in Takayama, Gifu, and continues to explore the potential of wood—through craft, leather, and molecular research—as a medium of culture and care.
