In the past, Japanese houses were finished almost entirely in Shiraki—uncoated white wood. From pillars to floors and fittings, the whole dwelling was embraced by its quiet presence. The roofs, too, were covered with kureita—thin split boards that extended the whiteness even overhead.

White wood was also close at hand in daily life. Utou shaku-shi, the simple ladles of Hida, served at the table, while daily wiping and care revealed the subtle beauty of the grain. Trees were believed to be vessels of the divine, and even as timber they remained objects of reverence.

Thus, from the spaces people lived in to the tools they held, Shiraki shaped life in both practical and spiritual ways.

かつて日本の家屋は、柱も床も建具も、家全体が白木（Shiraki）で仕上げられていました。屋根には「榑板」と呼ばれる割って作った薄板が用いられ、空間そのものが白木に包まれていたのです。さらに、暮らしの手元にも白木は息づいていました。有道杓子のような日用品は日々の食卓を支え、拭き掃除や手入れを通して人々は白木の静かな美しさを身近に感じ取ってきました。木は神の宿る存在と考えられ、材になった後も信仰の対象として尊ばれたのです。このように白木は、空間から手の中まで、実用と信仰の両面で人々の生活を形づくってきたのです。

In collaboration with Kyushu University, we discovered that the calming effect on the brain is stronger at low concentrations—so subtle that no scent is consciously perceived.

This finding revealed that we are unconsciously influenced by the natural compounds released from wood, even when we are not aware of their presence.

Through science, the quiet wisdom of Shiraki - Naked wood - has begun to be measured and understood.

九州大学との共同研究により、香りを感じないほどの低濃度の方が、脳の鎮静効果が高いことが明らかになりました。私たちは、木材から発せられる揮発成分に、無意識のうちに影響を受けていることがわかったのです。科学を通じて、白木（Shiraki / Naked Wood）の静かな叡智が可視化され、理解され始めています。
